Expository Preaching – Simplified Definition
Defining expository preaching can be difficult because preaching is a living process. It’s not just about words—it involves:
- God → the source of the message
- The preacher → the messenger
- The congregation → the listeners
No single definition can capture this fully, but Robinson gives a working definition:
Expository preaching is explaining and communicating a biblical message that comes from carefully studying the Bible passage in its original context.
The preacher studies the passage historically, grammatically, and literarily (considering its time, language, and style).
The Holy Spirit first applies the message to the preacher’s life, and then the preacher shares it with the congregation.
Simpler Version
Expository preaching means:
- Study the Bible passage carefully → Understand what God meant when He inspired it.
- Discover God’s message → Based on the original meaning in its context.
- Apply it to your own life → Let the Holy Spirit speak to you first.
- Communicate it clearly → Share God’s truth with the congregation so they can apply it too.
